United slip up in local derby
With manager Mark Campbell on a two day, SFA coaching course it was left to Jamie McCormick to take sole charge of Blackburn in this local derby on a heavy Station Park surface where, on the four minute mark, it was the home side who had the first sniff at goal but centre half John Murphy shoot just over from the edge of the area. Blackburn then ventured to the other end where Alan Brown forced Gillespie into a straight forward save from a twenty yard free-kick before Chris Simpson had an effort from similar distance that flew wide. It was Livingston who came closer still though when, from a swirling free-kick, David Murphy nipped in ahead of Hendrie to get his boot on the ball only to see it fly into the side netting. Jaconelli then collected a loose ball on the edge of the eighteen yard box and fired a shot just wide before a speculative effort from strike partner Tarditti sailed well over. However, Blackburn created much the clearest opening two minutes from the break but, after good work by Nicki Pelc and Nicky Miller down the right, David Wright could only fire high and wide from good position after Andy McQuillan had set him up for a pop at goal.
Ten minutes after the resumption a deflected shot by Brown looped up to an unmarked McQuillan just six yards out but the prolific front man seemed surprised to get the chance and could only head wide. Within sixty seconds the Station Park men made Blackburn pay for that scorned opportunity when Jaconelli's cross into the box was missed by both Davie Sneddon and Hendrie to allow TARDITTI to bundle the ball home from close range. Midway through the half a through ball sent McQuillan in on goal but, while doing well to hold off John Murphy, he couldn't get his shot past Gillespie who was quick off his line to get down and block. With time running out Blackburn had one last surge forward in search of the equaliser and when Jordan Rintoul's cross into box had Gillespie flapping Brown took advantage to hit a shot that was deflected wide. From the resultant corner the ball again found Brown, this time just inside the box, but his curling, net bound effort was clawed away by the big 'keeper at full stretch.
