A Brief History of Blackburn
5 MayHere are a few key dates in the history of Blackburn.
1152 - Blackburn is first mentioned in historical records, as Blachebrine.
1800s - Mining is established in the area and Blackburn grows.
1932 - Blackburn Athletic FC are founded but fold within five years.
1961-65 The population doubles, buoyed by the BMC plant at Bathgate and Glasgow overspill.
1977 - MP Tam Dalyell poses the West Lothian question, famously mentioning Blackburn.
1978 - Blackburn United are founded.
2009 - Blackburn girl Susan Boyle comes second on Britain's Got Talent!
2010 - s1blackburn.com is launched to let residents discuss local issues, place small ads, air their opinions, advertise events and show off pictures and video.

That's the briefest of brief summaries and it's full of gaps. But this is where you come in. There's lots of interest in local history and lots of local knowledge out there - so why not share it here?
